WARRIORS AGAINST AIDS HISTORY Founder of Warriors Against AIDS organization, Joanelle Romero, produced the first Warriors Against AIDS Benefit Awareness Concert in 1993 in Los Angeles, bringing light to the much overlooked issue of American Indian women and children living with HIV/AIDS. It was a groundbreaking concept.
That year 1993, Warriors Against AIDS honored Elizabeth Glaser for her willingness to speak the truth and stand up for what’s right. That benefit hallmarked the first and only American Indian benefit concert dedicated to the awareness of American Indian women and children living with HIV/AIDS.
A decade later, 2004 Warriors Against AIDS organization produced another awareness concert this one on a much bigger scale and more awareness was raised “House of Blues” was the venue.
FYI: in 1994, Joanelle Romero directed, produced and scored the first American Indian AIDS television series for PBS “Melvin & John” This aired nationally in 1994.
Los Angeles has the largest urban American Indian population in the nation with over 75,000 Indian inhabitants, representing various tribes. The State of California boasts the largest Indian population in the country with approximately 500,000 Indian residents from more than 33 different tribes. With an American Indian population of this size, creating the concert for awareness as well as programs to bring American Indians a traditional environment in which to heal and learn about the disease was imperative.

WARRIORS FACTS & AWARENESS INITIATIVE PROGRAMSWARRIORS AGAINST AIDS organization is the only HIV prevention and traditional healing initiative program in City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County that specifically addresses American Indian/Indigneous women and children living with HIV/AIDS.
Warriors Against AIDS was established in 1993 with an awareness concert and has began its partnership relations with other AIDS organizations and recovering homes in order to strengthen our mission and awareness. Its about the bigger picture ~ our future generations.
Women Are Sacred workshops established in 2006 and are on-going which include traditional "healing" and "talking circles". Our objectives are to empower our women and children with the tools that they need to re-create their lives in balance and harmony.
Sacred Retreats to include American Indian/Indigenous women and children of domestic violence and living with HIV/AIDS; to re-connect them with cultural and spiritual understandings of their Native beliefs and practices ~ to once again feel the sacredness. LISA TIGER "WARRIORS WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2007"Every year, Red Nation Celebration & Warriors Against AIDS organization in celebration of National Native AIDS Awareness Day and Woman’s History Month through a traditional ceremony honors an extraordinary woman with a special recognition.
This year, Red Nation Celebration & Warriors Against AIDS was proud to announce community activist LISA TIGER Woman of the Year. "Lisa Tiger’s tireless commitment to the American Indian AIDS awareness and her commitment to American Indian children makes her the ideal choice to be Red Nation’s/Warriors Against AIDS Woman of the Year for 2007," founder Joanelle Romero said. "She gives of her time in a way that's truly inspiring and Lisa’s sharing that night was courageous, a woman who stands up and speaks the truth, totally worthy of praise."
Lisa Tiger is a member of the Muscogee Nation and is of Creek, Seminole, Cherokee and Irish descent. Lisa has been doing AIDS education since learning she was infected with the virus in 1992. Infected by a boyfriend in 1988, in her hometown of Muskogee, Oklahoma, she went from HIV to AIDS in 1999. Lisa has won numerous awards for her work as an AIDS educator. For over a decade Lisa has dedicated her life to raising abandoned and abused children. In 1996 Lisa was granted custody of four Lakota (Sioux) siblings ages 3,5,6 and 7 and has made a home for them for nearly 10 years.
In 2003 Lisa married acclaimed Pueblo potter Diego Romero. After consulting with her physicians the couple decided to try for a pregnancy; Lisa inseminated herself with her husband's sperm and succeeded on her first attempt. Altough it was an extremely difficult pregnancy - Lisa, age 39, nearly lost her life - March 12, 2004 she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. The baby's name is Cornelia Margaret TaLadu Dana Tiger; family and friends call her Crickett.
AIDS education is, once again, a vital part of Lisa Tiger's life. Crickett however, takes precedents over every facet of Lisa's life. Crickett, now a toddler, travels with Lisa to all presentations. The family divides their time between Santa Fe, New Mexico and Muskogee, OK
